On Being a Stepper
Christianity can be summed up in two words: “Follow Me” (MAT 4:19). This is what Jesus said to people as He called them to step out in discipleship and then to make tracks in serving God. The “at hand” kingdom begins with feet pointed heavenward. So, does our shoe size fit the footprints of Christ? (1 PETER 2:21) Making Jesus “Lord” isn’t just about mouthing the words. It’s about making tracks following His example.
The ancient echo from the bush on fire at Mount Horeb-Sinai is about the first step in following God: “Take off your shoes” (EXODUS 3). The pursuit of the great “I AM” began humbly and barefooted. Moses learned that “all things are laid bare” before the One Whom God’s people follow (HEBREWS 4:13). Same with Joshua (JOSHUA 5:15). Same with Jesus (JOHN 13:5). John the Baptist had previously known that we are unworthy to try and take off the Lord’s shoes (LUK 3:16). We should start with removing our own sandals first. Those who “get it” when it comes to going with God get their shoes off for the God-washing of their feet and hurry to get in step with Him in the God-walking (GALATIANS 5:16,18,25). Steppers walk in light of God’s worthiness (1 JOHN 1:6-7), in His truth (2 JOHN 4; 3 JOHN 3-4), and in His paths of righteousness by quiet waters into God’s green pastures where the springfed waters of the river of life forever flow pure and crystal clear (PSALM 23:1-3; REVELATION 7:17; 22:1). Now that’s another take on the “steps of salvation”!
